Joomla One-point-Five is now Supported PDF Print E-mail

If you are planning to migrate to Joomla 1.5 and are wondering if there is any comment system you can use, worry no more!. The latest release of Jom Comment, 1.7.1 will install and run on your Joomla 1.5 beta site. Well, there are a few more bugs that need to be fixed, mostly related to the back end interface. You would need to enable the legacy mode for everything to work. So, you guys out there who just can't wait for Joomla 1.5, you now have a comment system to go with it... enjoy!

On a more personal note, here is my take on Joomla 1.5. The UTF-8 support is GREAT!. I've been waiting for this a long time, and this feature alone would want to make me to upgrade. However, I have a few personal worries.

1. There is a lot of new code and uses a lot of classes and sub-classes. Personally, I am not a huge fan of pure object oriented design in PHP application. PHP is a a scripting language, as such, it's strength lies on it being easy to understand, simple and easy to write. With Joomla 1.5, the code are a lot harder to understand. Although it doesn't strictly impose it's way of doing things on new components, NOT following Joomla 1.5 application framework probably is better for any new component.

2. Compatibility issues. Joomla 1.5 is certainly NOT backward compatible with Joomla 1.0.x. I believe, MOST components and bots would need an update to work on 1.5. To me, if I have to change even 1 single byte of my code, that means, it is NOT backward compatible. If you are using lot sof 3rd party component, and I believe we all do, it is best to wait for words from the developer regarding their support for 1.5

Anyway, most of you guys out there should NOT migrate your site just yet. For a new site, there will be a huge dilemma and confusion on which version is good for you. I expect things to be rather messy for a while until all the essential components supports Joomla 1.5.
